5.   Reading Stock Data

Understanding the Numbers

OK, so you are not quite sure yourself what all those number mean on the stock data page in your newspaper?  No need to fret!  SMG provides you with the tools you will need to understand stock data, as well as to teach these skills to your students.

Even more exciting is that you will find many of your students teaching their newly acquired skill of reading stock data to their parents, friends, etc!

The Stock Market Game has a built-in facility for students to look up ticker symbols and stock data, as well as to do their research.  You can learn how to use this facility in the Understanding Portfolios section of this Teacher Support Center.

Use the following document to teach students how to read stock data.  (Note:  it's not necessary for students to understand all the data - depending on their grade level -- but to be aware of data available.)

Interpreting stock data from the Internet

In the Lesson Planning section of your Teacher Support Center you will find further information for you to learn how to read and interpret stock data in the newspaper and on the Internet.

You will also find lessons in the Learning Resource Center to use with students to help them develop their stock research and data interpretation skills.
