8.  Using the Newspaper

Students will find that the newspaper is an excellent resource for following stock prices and for researching current events that affect stock prices.

If you follow stocks in the newspaper or online, you'll see that their prices change almost daily.  So what's up with that?  What makes these prices go up and down?

It's everyday current events that we read about in the news.  Good news about a company can make a price go up. Unexpected news that harms a company can make the price of its stock drop.

You can find several lessons in the Lesson Planning and the Learning Resource Center that focus on events students will read about in the newspaper that will affect stock price--from company news, industry news, the country's economic conditions, international conditions, and the stock market itself.

Try using the following activity sheet to help students understand how events can affect the stock market.
